Sara Duterte running for president in 2022 still not final, Palace says

Updated: Jun 6, 2021

Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio has yet to confirm her decision of running for president in 2022 contrary to a lawmaker’s claim, Malacañang said on June 3.

Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque clarified in his press briefing that Mayor Duterte-Carpio is still undecided about her political plans in 2022. This is after Albay 2nd District Rep. Joey Salceda said in an interview with Teleradyo that Mayor Duterte-Carpio “will definitely run in 2022” for the presidential seat.

“Ang alam ko ay wala pa pong desisyon ang ating Davao City mayor. Wala pa rin pronouncement na siya po ay tatakbo bilang pangulo bagamat marami po ang nagnanais na siya nga po ay tumakbo,” Roque said.

Further, Roque said that President Duterte is still against her daughter running for presidency. “Narinig ko po personally ang Presidente as of last Monday at ang sinabi po niya, hindi pa rin daw po tatakbo si Mayor Inday Sara.”

He added, “Ang rekomendasyon nga po daw niya ay ‘wag siyang tumakbo. That’s the latest I heard from the President’s own mouth.”

Meanwhile, Rep. Salceda claimed that Mayor Duterte-Carpio is now in the “process of building alliances.”

Earlier this year, campaign materials urging Mayor Duterte-Carpio to run has been spreading, but the president’s daughter consistently told supporters that she will not be running.
