The country might experience cooler days ahead as the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) on June 4 announced the start of the rainy season.

According to PAGASA, the passage of Tropical Storm Dante and the rainfalls experienced recently across the country indicates that the rainy season is underway.

For the past three months, the state weather bureau has been recording high “heat index” or a measure of “human discomfort index” brought by the temperature.

The high heat index made daily activities, social distancing in small houses, and even taking a nap in the afternoon discomforting or difficult.

For Melinda Alva, a resident of Quezon province which has areas recorded a “danger level” heat index (41°C to 54°C), the announcement of PAGASA that “the probability of near to above normal rainfall conditions is high in the next two months (June-July)" invites a slight relief from the scorching heat.

PAGASA Administrator Vicente Malano also said that western parts of the country, including Metro Manila can expect intermittent rain caused by the southwest monsoon or habagat.

However, monsoon breaks or "breaks in rainfall events which can last for several days or weeks, may still occur,” Malano explained.

“PAGASA will continue to closely monitor the situation and updates/advisories shall be issued as appropriate. The public and all concerned agencies are advised to take precautionary measures against the impacts of the rainy season,” Manalo added.
