WHO lists Sinovac COVID vaccine for emergency use

The World Health Organization (WHO) approves Sinovac Biotech’s COVID vaccine for emergency use listing on Tuesday, June 1.

WHO’s validation of the vaccine assures that “it meets international standards for safety, efficacy, and manufacturing,” the UN agency stated, paving the way for faster access and procurement in underdeveloped countries.

The independent panel of experts recommended in a statement Sinovac’s vaccine for adults over 18, with a second dose 2-4 weeks later. The data also suggests that it is likely to have a protective effect in older people so there is no recommended age limit.

Sinovac claims that it had supplied more than 600 million doses of its vaccine as of end-May and over 430 million doses have already been administered.

Chile, Brazil, Indonesia, Mexico, Thailand and Turkey have been using Sinovac for their mass inoculation.

Sinovac is the second Chinese shot approved by WHO, following Sinopharm produced by Beijing Bio-Institute of Biological Products Co Ltd, subsidiary of China National Biotec Group (CNBG).
